Racing News 22 April 2008
Performance of the week was Jon Pierces 2nd in the vets Gorrick race, there was also a couple of winners with Rachael Denman and Jackie Roberts both taking top spot in the fun and veteran women's categories respectively. On the road front it's been nice to see a good turnout from the club at Hillingdon evening series where I have managed to sneak up in the bunch sprint to take a couple of wins in the 3rd cat race. On the time trial front at the 1st Bath RC 10 Paul Williams took the final podium spot. These events are every Wed evening so if time trialling is your bag or you just want to check out your fitness get along. On the training front we are organising our own road training at the Hillingdon ct this Thursday meeting at 5:30 for some interval training so if you want to improve your road sprint/anaerobic capacity come along.

Racing News Update
The weekends results have been given a boost by this news from Mark Baxter himself:

Just to let you know that my weekend at Newport went really well. I was competing for The English Talent Team in Future Revolution against teams of Juniors sent by France, Holland, Ireland, Greece, Wales and Scotland. I won the Derny race, was fourth in the Devil and I think third in the Madison. In the Derny race I lapped all the field up to third place and beat two members of the Dutch Junior team and a member of the GB Olympic Development squad - the squad I am hoping to get promoted to in the summer.

We all wish Mark the best of luck in his goals.

Racing News
It was good news for the Beyond Mountain Bike teams Mark Baxter as having shone at recent track training sessions with the National Cycling team, youth rider Mark who is strongly tipped to follow in the wheel tracks of the successful senior riders has been selected to ride for England in a forthcoming international track meeting.
On their more traditional off-road terrain riding in the first round of the National mountain Bike series Paul Wilkinson looked to be heading for a maiden National win as he lead the field after two laps in the sports class, but although he lead for most of the last lap the race ended in sprint finish where Wilkinson paid for his early efforts and had to settle for 3rd just 9 seconds away from the win. Last years sports champion Gerald Tudor along with Nick Evans rode in the experts class and finished 12th and 26th respectively.
On the road racing front Paul Crook was the best of the Specialized sponsored team riders in the Westerly Road Race as he took 5th in the 1st and 2nd category race having been in a race long breakaway, whilst in the supporting race Chris Denman and Paul Williams both made the winning breakaway group of riders but their efforts to break away from this group late on in the race were thwarted and in the sprint finish Denman was 7th with Williams 11th.

Beyond girls take podium in the Summit MTB races
The Beyond Mountain Bike team club riders took part in the local Summit MTB races at the weekend and once again they were victorious with Frances Pressner winning the Fun class and then despite her earlier efforts she teamed up with husband Theo to take 3rd in the mixed pairs relay race later in the afternoon. In the youth rce both Rachael Denman and Rebecca Pressner were in fine form but both finsihed just outside the top three in the mixed sex race with full results yet to be finalised. Elsewhere Robert Bordi one of the riders supported by team sponsor Specialized riding in the Newbury Road Clubs hill climb showed his climbing ability by taking 6th overall and the award for the first under 18.

26th October 2007
Beyond road team take part in WLC hill climb.
A bit belated the club news this week but what a busy last weekend, rides all over the place, Jackie organised an MTB ride down her way, others did the Evans ride and then there was the Summit MTB race and congratulations to Theo and Francis 3rd in the mixed pairs , Matt 4th in the fun, Emma 5th women's race, Ken and Theo 11th and 12th in the vets as well as Rachael and Rebecca whose results are yet to be finalised .

Also on Sunday the club thanks to Paul Williams promoted the WLC hill climb and although we didn't win we did take 2nd Jack Adams, 3rd and 1st Junior Robert Bordi ,4th Jack Sutcliffe and 5th Sam Phillips to take the team win with Rachael Denman winning the youth section.

As well as this Sat was the clubs first trip of the winter to Calshot track and a good time was had by all, the next date is just less than 4 weeks away so if you missed out this time make sure you come along to the next one.

This week Mon was club night, this wed there is an off road night ride meeting at Matts at 6:30 for a blast around Swinley Forest, Sat a few of us are making a change and doing the Bushey Park running race give me a bell if you want more details. Paul Williams is planning two road rides over the weekend meeting at the Black Horse PH mail him for final times/distances then on Sunday the MTB ride is around Surrey meeting at Dorking train station at 9am.

Looking further ahead the club are organising a beginners ride on the 3rd November with the idea of attracting a few new members or encouraging those that have not been out for a while to just come out for a short ride and see what MTBiking and the club is about, the meeting point is the Denham Country Park at 10 a.m. so spread the word.

4th November there is a Gorrick MTB race and then the 17th is Calshot and the 18th is the Test Valley MTB tour which starts near to Andover and has attracted a few club entries already , there are also a few more events been discussed on the club website so why not post up on the forum any other rides planned or your interest in the already planned rides

Cheers Chris

Club success at Thetford Dusk til Dawn, and fun in Coed Y Brenin............
A busy weekend for the club with a number of different events going , the big event for most was the club trip to Coed Brenin with 9 of us enjoying some superb unseasonal weather , loads of sunshine, great scenery and superb trails. As well as doing all the trails around Coed which are mostly quite extreme we also did the nearby Marin Trail which was most peoples favourite more flowing and higher speed descents making it everyone's favourite. A few of us also did the Penmacho trail which is another hard but fun trail. Got to say having not been down to Coed for a while it was a real buzz (nearly as good as the buzz trying to overtake the motorbike on the A470 on the way down) and another trip is planned for May/June next year so if you missed out this time make sure you don't next time. When we go we will be looking at alternative accommodation in the Betws-y-Coed area as although Ferndale where we stayed was an ideal geographical location the digs were in the process of being sold and
it is clear the owners at this stage have stopped spending any money on the place.

Elsewhere it was the Dusk to Dawn MTB race with Phil Earl best finisher taking 24th in a very large and competitive field with Matt Ibbs and Terry Forrest both having to take a break through the night, Terry due to crashing and Matt suffering from a bad back.Got to say I do like the race venue Thetford but D2D in my mind is like riding a 24hr race without the good part, racing in daylight so well done to them all for even taking part !

Such is the strength in depth despite the above events we still had riders taking part in the Gorrick event with Ian Petherbridge 3rd in the grand vets, Stefano 4th in the Masters race, John P 7th, Ian Charlton 9th and Ben Tisdall 18th in the vets race once again well done to all of those that took part.

Looking ahead to this week tonight Monday it is club night at the Crown so there might be a few stories from Wales coming through, most people had a few little offs so will no doubt be showing off the war wounds. At this stage there are no organised MTB rides but no doubt after tonight at the pub something will be organised so check out the website for details .

Looking further ahead on the 21st October the club are organising a road hill climb a very low key affair, no entry form , the club pays the entry fee and suitable for all abilities male and female with a gentle road ride before and after just send Paul W an e-mail if you want more details or if your doing it. We have won this event twice in the last 3 years so lets make it 3 this year so make sure you enter.

As a warm up on Saturday 20th October its that time of year again - time to retreat indoors and sample the delights of an indoor velodrome when we go to Calshot
track down near Southampton at 10.00 a.m.

For those of you that have been before you will no doubt be keen to return and experience again thrills of riding the boards.
If you have never tried the track it really is quite easy and everyone that tries it falls in love with the challenge and excitement of swooping down the banking and trying to hold a fast line around the bends.

Its a really good cheap day out - bike hire is around £5 and the session will be about the same.

Please let Dick know ASAP if you want to attend either by phone -01252 835153 or to dick_reeve@yahoo.co.uk . Both Dick and myself are coaches for Calshot and will quickly have you riding the track.

Future dates are
17th Nov 0930-1230
15th Dec 1300-1600
19thJan 1000-1300
16th Feb 0930-1230

Also don't forget we have a number of club items for sale
Mugs £2
Water Bottles £2
Towels £8
Polo Shirts £7
as well as cheap race clothing-e-mail me for details of stock

Cheers Chris Denman
